Lab Safety

General Laboratory Rules:

No food or drink allowed in the laboratories.

Place all bags and coats under the workbench or on coat hooks to prevent tripping hazards.

Please be considerate…

Clean up your station when you’ve completed the lab.

Check your station for personal effects (including pens/pencils/calculators, etc.).

Put scrap paper and/or other garbage in the waste bin.

Safety:

IN THE EVENT OF AN ALARM, IMMEDIATELY VACATE BUILDING VIA NEAREST EXIT.

Report all injuries, unsafe conditions, and/or damaged equipment to your TA or Lab Coordinator.

For first aid, alert your TA.
First aid providers for Physics is Graham Pearson and Graham Ferrier (KHS 235A).
Alternatively, contact Security at 416-979-5040, or dial 80 from campus phones.

Electrical Safety:

Floor and wall outlets are at 120 Volts AC. Contact with 120 Volts AC could be fatal. Use caution when working around cables and outlets.

Report any frayed cords or damaged equipment to your TA or Lab Coordinator immediately.

IN THE EVENT OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK:

If victim is conscious…

Do not touch victim until power has been shut down.
If safe to do so, pull plug or turn off equipment power.
Alert your TA or Lab Coordinator.
Seek medical attention if required (dial 80).

If victim is unconscious…

Do not touch victim until power has been shut down.
Alert your TA or Lab Coordinator.
Seek first aid and medical attention immediately (dial 80).

Radiation Safety:

Sources NEVER leave the laboratory.

All sources must be signed out from TA for use during lab session and signed in again when measurements are completed.

All sources are closed, and therefore should not pose any contamination risk. If a sample becomes damaged, alert your TA immediately.
